Like many people, email marketing expert Ken Countess watches the big game each year mostly for the commercials.
To him, this year's event was a big letdown.
“Not only was the game unexciting, but (in my opinion) the commercials were uninspiring, too,” Ken said. “Truth be told, I switched off the game during the second half.”
Ken continued: “But despite my disinterest in football, I watched to see which companies had the best ads. The ‘big spender’ brands made their presence known in ways that were informative, amusing, or at the very least, set them apart from companies that did not ‘pay-to-play’.”
“$8,000,000 for a 30 second ad is a huge number - and that investment comes with no guarantee that the viewer will actually see the ad. After all, with so many people stepping away from the TV when it airs, that money might as well have been flushed down the toilet. So if it was not seen, it was a worthless investment.”
What does this have to do with email?
For any business, large or small, email continues to be powerful.
On average, it delivers a 36:1 return (ROI) on the money invested in it. (One of Ken’s clients gets 150:1 on her email marketing campaigns.)
It delivers a return on investment that's 3x-12x higher than social media. Yes, it's that much better.
How does it compare with other advertising?
If you don't see a TV spot when it airs, or if you don't scroll through your social feed within a short time after a post was published, it's as good as gone.
On the other hand, if you send an email that isn't opened shortly after it was sent, the consequences of not being right away seen aren't as serious - because it still stands out in the recipient's inbox as unread.
Despite not being opened, your brand is still visible when the brand name is in the "From: Name" in the email, and it becomes a continuing passive reminder of your company's existence.
And it's a bonus when the email is opened.
Email is one of many tools in your marketing toolbox - and it outperforms them all - at a fraction of the investment.
