Finding The Right Home Health for You

Before starting your search for home health care, consider the level of assistance you need and how long you’ll require it. There are three main types of caregivers:

  • Personal Care Aides: These non-licensed caregivers assist with tasks like shopping, cooking, light housekeeping, transportation, and companionship.
  • Home Health Aides: In addition to personal care tasks, these aides monitor health and assist with daily activities like bathing and dressing. They must undergo state-specific training.
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs): CNAs provide the same services as home health aides but with additional training to perform medical tasks such as checking vital signs and changing dressings. They work under the supervision of a nurse or doctor.

If you need both medical care and help with daily activities, you might need more than one type of caregiver. For example, you can hire personal care aides and arrange for a registered nurse to visit periodically.

Agencies ensure caregivers have background checks, unlike when hiring independently. During interviews, ask about their experience, availability, and how they’ve helped clients in the past.

Keep in mind that Medicare typically only covers part-time, short-term home care under a doctor’s order. Veterans may qualify for home care benefits through the VA, and long-term care insurance can cover some home health needs. Medicaid may also offer funded home care services, depending on the state. In some cases, you might be able to hire a family member as a paid caregiver.
