I’m hearing a lot about fear from my friends and colleagues. Between a fraught election, the ongoing worry about the economy and unrest all over the world, everything feels volatile and uncertain.
What strikes me is that I'm hearing the same message from people on both side of the political aisle. Everyone is convinced that everyone on "the other side" is bound and determined to ruin us. They're sure that the end of our country as we know it is inevitable, and it's someone else's fault.
That's what really scares me.
Believe me: I know there are real things to be worried about, and political partisanship is higher than it's been in a long time. But after talking to a lot of people from different backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs, I believe that there's still more that unites us than divides us. The angriest voices may be the loudest, but that's not who most of us are. The vast majority of us are kind, decent people who want the best for ourselves, our loved ones, our businesses and our country. We may not agree on the best way to get it, but that's okay. In America, disagreement about method is in our DNA.
What's important is that we don't let the fear get between us.
Fear can trap us and debilitate us. It can keep us from doing the good, productive work we need to be doing, in life and business. That's why I've written a blog about how to face your fear. In it, I talk about the function of fear, and I share the three things you can do to break through your fear. This is an important topic. Please take a few minutes to read it. And please reach out and let me know what you think and how I can help.
It's going to be okay.
I'm not saying there might not be tough times ahead, but I truly believe we can get through them together.
