The Gift Of Opera For The Community

Opera Orlando is proud to announce FREE tickets to All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 presented at Orlando Family Stage on December 12-14 as a gift to the community to celebrate the Opera’s 10th Anniversary! Written by Peter Rothstein with vocal arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach, All is Calm serves as the perfect lead-up to Opera Orlando’s MainStage production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night at Steinmetz Hall on February 6 & 8. Both works center around the unbelievable true story of the WWI Christmas Truce.

On Christmas Eve of 1914 along the western front, a German soldier stepped into No Man’s Land to sing “Stille nacht (Silent Night),” leading to an extraordinary and unprecedented night of music, acceptance, and peace. French, British, and Scottish soldiers joined the refrain in their native tongues and the universal language of music brought “would be enemies” together for a true moment of shared humanity that would never be repeated nor forgotten. The truce occurred approximately five months after World War I began and consisted of a number of unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front. There were joint burial ceremonies, prisoner swaps, and even soccer matches in No Man’s Land as part of these impromptu truces. “It was such a joy developing our original production of All is Calm, and I am so happy we are bringing it back and sharing it for free with the Central Florida community,” shares Opera Orlando general director Gabriel Preisser. “Being able to connect with veterans and their families through this work has been a highlight of our past ten years of productions, and we look forward to once again sharing its message of hope and peace for the holidays.”

A cast of nine soldiers come together a capella and in harmony for All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 to retell this powerful story using text from actual letters and first hand experiences of the soldiers who witnessed and participated in this momentous event.

Director Ian Silverman makes his Company debut with Andrew Minear returning to music direct a cast led by Chris Teixeira, John Teixeira, Stephen Mumbert, and Torlef Borsting. All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 was developed and produced by Cantus Vocal Ensemble and Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis, MN, December 2007. The show premiered Off-Broadway in 2018 produced by Laura Little Theatricals.
