One in eight Florida seniors is living with Alzheimer's, a progressive brain disease that affects thinking, behavior and memory. It is not a normal part of aging. Symptoms eventually grow severe enough to interfere with daily tasks where a caregiver is needed.
With so many impacted by this disease, it’s critical Floridians have access to local resources and their voices are heard by leaders. Today, Alzheimer's is at the forefront of biomedical research and several new treatments have become available that can slow the disease in the early stages. The hope is treatments will continue to be developed but only if funding drives new research.
The Alzheimer's Association Central & North Florida chapter serves 43 counties with education and support and works to advance research toward methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure. In Tallahassee and across the state, volunteers and staff advocate for the needs and rights of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
One way you can get involved today is through The Longest Day. Leading up to the Summer Solstice on June 20, 2024, thousands of participants from across Florida host an activity of their choice to raise funds for research, care and support initiatives through the Alzheimer's Association. From basketball to baking and card games to crafts, any activity you enjoy can be a fundraiser! For more information about The Longest Day, reach out to Denise Ward at dlward@alz.org or 407-963-4629.
