Opera Orlando will present free performances for the general public of its touring production of Joe Illick and Mark Campbell’s Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World based on the book by the same name by Laurence Anholt. This family-friendly, 40-minute opera production will tour local elementary schools throughout Central Florida, featuring the Company’s Studio Artists, soprano Laura Corina Sanders, mezzo-soprano Linda Collazo, tenor David Soto Zambrana, and baritone Jose Cuartas, along with Glorivy Arroyo in the role of Rosita with stage direction by Opera Orlando Youth Company associate director Sarai Goley.
The opera, sung in Spanglish, tells the story of Mariana, a young girl in Mexico who forms an unexpected friendship with the artist Frida Kahlo. While Frida paints her portrait, Mariana learns about friendship, belief in oneself, and overcoming her fears. The production will visit more than ten schools throughout Orange and Osceola counties with three additional community performances in Mt. Dora and downtown Orlando that will be free and open to the public. The presentation also serves as a lead-up to the Company’s MainStage presentation of Frida in January at Steinmetz Hall.
As a special pre-show presentation for the Company’s Mount Dora performances, Hispanic chamber music ensemble Musiva will play selections by Hispanic composers. Learn more about Musiva here: Musiva Concert Series | Home.
For the Broadway United Methodist Church performance, a pre-show presentation by members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company is included. Enjoy holiday favorites and other selections sung by the Company’s amazing young singers and emerging artists. Learn more about the Opera Orlando Youth Company here: Youth Company — Opera Orlando
