Celebrate Italian Heritage Month with TOSCA

Opera Orlando celebrates Italian Heritage month this October with Puccini's tragic masterwork Tosca. Join Opera Orlando in Steinmetz Hall at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as the Company stages a brand new production of one of the world’s most famous and quintessentially Italian operas for the first time in one of the world’s most beautiful theaters. The production will run for two performances on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. and October 29 at 2 p.m. and the Company is pleased to be joined by the Honorary Consul of Italy for opening night with a special pre-show reception honoring Italian culture in Orlando.

“Tosca is a perfect way to celebrate Italy given the opera is not only composed by one of the greatest Italian composers, Giacomo Puccini but also the opera is set in Rome at actual historical sites still present today,” says Opera Orlando general director Gabriel Preisser. “We are thrilled to be joined by the Honorary Consul of Italy for this new production featuring an incredible international cast, our fantastic Youth Company members, and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit led by acclaimed conductor Eiki Isomura and stage director Josh Shaw.”

Joining Maestro Isomura and Mr. Shaw is a world-class cast headlined by the spectacular Greek soprano Eleni Calenos singing one of opera’s most famous arias “Vissi d’arte…” as Tosca, a signature role for her. Celebrated tenor Nathan Granner will play the dashing artist Cavaradossi, performing “E lucevan le stelle…,” and baritone Daniel Scofield sings the villainous Scarpia. Additional artists include Opera Orlando favorite Lloyd Reshard as Angelotti, Metropolitan Opera baritone Stefan Szkafarowsky as Sacristan, 2023-24 Studio Artists, and members of the Opera Orlando Chorus and Youth Company.

“Opera was born in Italy, and I can think of no better way to celebrate our heritage than with this grand opera that captures so much of Italian culture and art,” stated Honorary Consul of Italy Antonietta Brancaccio. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Opera Orlando and cannot wait for our entire community to enjoy this Italian masterpiece in a hall built for opera.”

Estimated run time is two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission. A pre-show reception will be held in the second tier lobby of Steinmetz Hall to honor Italian heritage with Italian appetizers, desserts, and wine. Tickets for the reception are $50 per person. Opera Orlando Ambassadors may attend for FREE.
