On March 8, 2020, the front door of Karen Keene's house blew in. She couldn't see who it was but she ran back to the bedroom, locked the door and called 911.
As bullets started piercing the bedroom door, she fled to the bathroom, still on the phone. The bullets kept coming.
“I wasn’t even listening to the dispatcher. I thought I was going to die.” She lay on the floor, clutching her side, bullet holes and broken glass everywhere.
That's how Karen described what would be the most terrifying and traumatic night of her life to Orlando Health. The trauma center saved her life, performing 23 surgeries.
Today, Keene Keene is well on her way to recovery and is working to end gun violence in the United States. She is the Founder and Chief Strategic Advisor of ATHENA NextGen Orlando, empowering professional women to level up through a masterclass series facilitated by a faculty of top female executives.
Karen was recognized as Woman of the Year in 2024 and 2017 by Orange Appeal; 2024
Woman of the Year by Orlando Magazine; 2018 Business Leader of the Year by i4
Business; and the 2016 Summit Award Honoree by the Central Florida Women’s
Resource Center.
She's also a Seminole County resident and a graduate of Leadership Seminole and Oviedo High School!
