Opera Orlando is accepting applications for its next cohort of singers for the 2024 Summer Institute for the Next Generation of Singers (SINGS!). The Company’s annual summer training course for Young Artists will take place July 20-26 at the Opera Orlando offices in downtown Orlando. The week-long intensive culminates in a showcase concert on Saturday, July 27 presented at the Timucua Arts Foundation. Admission for the concert is free and open to the public.
“I am looking forward to welcoming returning and new singers this summer for SINGS!,” shares education director Sarah Purser. “It is always exciting for me to see what our participants can achieve in a week, and this summer we have a great line-up of faculty and staff to help guide these emerging young professionals including the Opera’s general director and Grammy Award-winning baritone Gabriel Preisser, acting coach and theater teacher Erin Michelson, and acclaimed tenor Alex Mansoori. We really focus on the individual with this program, equipping them with the best training and tools possible for them to continue their classical singing career be it opera, musical theater, or choral.”
The SINGS! program is designed specifically for young singers, ages 15 to 20, who are interested in pursuing a classical singing career. This program provides professional-level training to help young singers navigate and prepare for college auditions, while also providing insight into how best to build a lifelong career in classical music. There is a lot in store for this year’s SINGS! participants including acting workshops, masterclasses, yoga sessions, vocal health, anatomy seminars, and individualized vocal training and coaching. Singers will also have the unique opportunity to work with Opera Orlando artistic director Grant Preisser to create a complete branding package for themselves including new headshots, a professional bio, resume, and the start of a website, which are all essential tools for singers working in today’s evolving entertainment industry.
“Now in its fourth year, it is great to see SINGS! alumni finding success as singers,” says Ms. Purser. “Baritone Nicholas Dieux (SINGS! class of 2021), for example, has been singing leading roles at Stetson University where he studies vocal performance, and he will be performing the role of Papageno in Lyric Opera Studio Weimar’s production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte this summer. We are always excited to see SINGS alumni finding success in the performing arts; after all, that is what the program is designed to do, set young singers up for success.”
Participants end the week with a FREE concert on Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Timucua Arts Foundation. The concert will showcase the singers’ work throughout the program, and it will be followed by a reception for the singers, their parents, and audience members. The concert is free and open to the public.
Interested singers can find more information and submit their application at OperaOrlando.org/Sings. The deadline for submissions and early registration pricing is April 30.
