Sanford, FL – October 24, 2023 – Bicikleta Bike Shop in Historic Downtown Sanford is gearing up to host an unforgettable event in honor of Florida's Emancipation Day Celebration. "Sanford's Ride to Freedom," set for May 18, 2024, will commemorate this important historical date and enrich the community about Sanford's remarkable black historic buildings and communities. This unique event, organized to foster awareness and unity, will allow cyclists to journey through Central Florida's rich history.
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared the freedom of enslaved people in the Southern states. However, it was not until May 20, 1865, that the state of Florida was finally freed, and the Emancipation Proclamation became fully effective. Sanford's Ride to Freedom celebrates this occasion in Florida's history and its lasting impact on the community.
